Creation of a Short Film : Gaining Inspiration From Music....

So I was in the car with mum drifting into my own world after a busy day shopping when the Beatles song 'Another Day' came on and I screamed (no joking I really did scream) "this is exactly how I want my protagonist former life to be portrayed". The song was written by Paul McCartney, below are the lyrics which really made me think this is so similar to life I'm try to portray of Jenny, whereby she is living like clockwork in a bubble of money and unhappiness and it is not until the mysterious male leaves her shoes that the spell is broken and she experiences a different form of life one where she can "take a minute to stop and stare"

Every day she takes a morning bath, she wets her hair,
Wraps a tow'l around her as she's heading for the bedroom chair,
It's just another day.
Slipping into stockings, stepping into shoes,
Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat.
It's just another day.

At the office were the papers grow, she takes a break,
Drinks another coffee and she finds it hard to stay awake,
It's just another day
It's just another day
It's just another day.

So sad, so sad,
Sometimes she feels so sad.
Alone in her apartment she'd dwell
Till the man of her dreams comes to break the spell.

This has really made me then think to past history, and how throughout all of history women have faced this feeling on entrapment whether this is in accordance with the new "business" women status, whereby they feel trapped to prove that they can do it all perfectly or in the past where although not in the work place women still felt trapped at home, with the pressure of having to be the perfect mother, housewife and partner, to look perfect, to be kind and to always have food on the table, clean clothes on the children. To leave with a lasting thought here is the video alongside lyrics on 'Another Day'...

Creation of a Short Film : The Script...

So earlier I created a post of how important the script is to the creation of my film, and below is the blueprint to my short film, as I planning on just using digentic and non-digentic sound and music rather than dialogue my script contains just the location and shots of each key scene.

The Script

The Elements Behind Creating a Script...

The script, is more commonly known as the screenplay. It is written within present tense, and expresses what the audience will see and hear therefore it is a visual, allowing a written blueprint for the entire film making process to be created. A screenplay has many component and they must be arranged in the right place, and although there are thousands of constructions of a screenplay experts state that all these can come together in ten major building block, and it is these essentials which I have applied when creating my own screenplay, although some I have had to adapt in order to fit a short film criteria rather than a feature film :
Story and Character : A screenplay starts from a high concept idea as well as from the development of an unforgettable character
Outline Before Writing : Before starting to write the screenplay, it is essential that you know how it will end and begin and that you are able to create five major point about the plot
Three-Act Structure : All though a sequence can be debated, experts agree that the story is told in three main aspects
Original Voice : Clear and concise writing is key to creating a screenplay, keeping action description to just four lines or less whilst ensuring that it still sounds original
Screenplay Form : A professional format is a must, as well as correct page appearance
What Happens Next : All scenes must move the story forward or reveal the character or do both however any scene that does neither is not necessary and therefore should be cut
Short Scenes : A screenplay must move fast, therefore three pages should be the absolute maximum before you cut to a new location, typically half a page is used within feature films
Brief Dialogue : Film in itself is a visual medium, it should be shown therefore the dialogue lines should be kept short
Under 120 Pages : One screenplay page equals to one film minute, therefore a feature drama film should be around 120 pages
Know The Logline : In one sentence be able to pit "what the story is about"

Above is an interactive video which I sourced from YouTube all about how to format a professional screenplay, the reason why I have put so much research into the elements of a screenplay is because they are the essential blueprint to any film and therefore I feel that it is important to understand the components which go into the creation of a professional screenplay

Creation of a Short Film : Props...

The term props within film is defined as any portable item, which is meant to be visible on the set of the film . Therefore as a term it include a huge range of objects; Dressing Props (these are used to dress the sets such as the furniture, drapes and flooring), Hand Props (these are the items which are used or held by the actors/actresses), Hero props (these are the objects that are central to the action within the scene), Stunt Props (these are replica items which are made of a soft material), Mechanical Props (these may move or illuminate) and Other Props (including weapon such as guns/knives and greenery/foliage including trees/plants). Within a feature films the properties department is responsible for the creation, operation and maintenance of all props. Blow is a video whereby it looks around a prop store within London (you really can find anything on YouTube!)

Off course within my short film, there will be a less diverse range of props, however they still play a crucial part within my film, especially as the plot revolves around the object of shoes. Below is a list of a few of the props which I anticipate including within my film :

Shoes
- Black high heels
- Vintage brogues
- Ballerina Pumps
The Flat
- Alarm clock
- Coffee mug
- Bed and bedside table
Key Events
- Signs for bench and bridge
- Labels for shoes
- Mobile phone
For The Filming
- Camera
- Tri-pod
- Dolly
- Script
- Storyboard
